Common Loaf Lengths by Country

Region Common Lengths Notes
United States Standard: 11-12" (28-30cm)
Family: 15-16" (38-40cm)
Typically sold in poly bags.
United Kingdom Small: ~20-22cm
Large: ~25-28cm
Often square (toastie) tins.
India Standard: ~20-22cm
Family: ~28-30cm
Britannia / Modern sized loaves.
Australia/NZ Standard: ~25-27cm Toast slices are significantly thicker.

Thickness Matters: Toastie vs. Sandwich Slices

  • Thick/Toastie (2.2cm): Best for hearty breakfasts. Reduces slice count significantly.
  • Medium (1.25cm): The standard "goldilocks" width found in most supermarkets.
  • Sandwich/Thin (0.9cm): Designed for lunchboxes, maximizing slices per loaf.

How it Works

This calculator takes the Loaf Length and divides it by the average Slice Thickness for your chosen bread type.

Assumptions

  • Standard White slice thickness = 1.25cm.
  • Unless "Heels" are checked, 2 slices (worth the slice thickness) are subtracted.
