The number of slices isn’t random; it’s a simple calculation based on a few key factors. This calculator uses a standard formula to give you a reliable estimate. Here’s what we consider:
- Loaf Length: The total usable length of the loaf, not including the very ends of the crust if they are unusually shaped. A longer loaf will yield more slices.
- Slice Thickness: This is the most critical factor. Thinner slices mean more slices per loaf. We measure this in inches. Standard commercial slices are often around 0.5 inches thick.
- The Heels: Every loaf has two end pieces, or heels. The calculator can include or exclude these from the total count. Heels are typically the same thickness as regular slices.
