What is temperature?

- Rankine: An engineering favorite (1859). It combines the absolute zero starting point of Kelvin with the smaller degree increments of Fahrenheit.

Understanding Kelvin: the absolute scale
Scientists prefer Kelvin because it is an "absolute" scale. It doesn't start at an arbitrary point like freezing water; it starts at Absolute Zero (0K), the lowest possible temperature in the universe.

Conversion formulas explained
Celsius ↔ Fahrenheit. Multiply by 1.8 (9/5) and add 32. The ratio 9/5 exists because Fahrenheit has 180 degrees between freezing and boiling, while Celsius has only 100.
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Celsius ↔ Kelvin. The simplest conversion. The "step" size is identical; you just shift the starting point by 273.15 degrees.
K = °C + 273.15
°C = K − 273.15
Why is conversion so hard?
It feels difficult because the scales don't share a zero point (0°C ≠ 0°F) and they grow at different rates (1°C change is nearly double a 1°F change).
Mental math trick (F to C): Need a rough estimate? Subtract 30 and divide by 2. Example: 86°F. 86 − 30 = 56. 56 / 2 = 28°C. (Actual is 30°C — close enough for deciding what to wear.)
