How it works

The converter uses the euro foreign exchange reference rates published by the European Central Bank (ECB). The ECB quotes every currency against the euro: one number per currency, saying how many units of it one euro buys. On 15 September 2026, for example, 1 euro was 1.1539 US dollars, 7.4752 Danish kroner and 10.7850 Norwegian kroner.

A conversion to or from the euro uses that number directly. 100 euros in Norwegian kroner on that day was 100 × 10.7850 = 1,078.50 NOK.

A conversion between two other currencies is a cross rate, and the converter calculates it via the euro. It divides by the rate of the currency you convert from and multiplies by the rate of the currency you convert to:

result = amount × rate of the target currency ÷ rate of the source currency

With the same day's rates, 250 US dollars in Danish kroner is 250 × 7.4752 ÷ 1.1539 = 1,619.55 DKK. The ECB publishes no dollar–krone rate of its own, so a cross rate is a figure we calculate from two of the ECB's rates, not one the ECB has set.

The result is shown with the target currency's usual number of decimals: two for most currencies, none for currencies such as the Japanese yen and the South Korean won. Below it you see the unit rate, what 1 unit of the source currency is worth in the target currency to six significant digits, and the date the rates apply to. Use Swap to convert the other way.

When the rates are updated

The ECB updates its reference rates at around 16:00 CET on every working day. The rates come from a daily concertation between central banks across Europe, which normally takes place at around 14:10 CET, so they are a snapshot of the market at that moment, not a live price.

There are no new rates at weekends or on TARGET closing days, when the euro area's payment system is shut: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, Christmas Day and 26 December. On those days the latest published rates stay in place.

We fetch the new rates after the ECB has published them, later the same day, and the page is rebuilt with them. The date under the result always tells you which day the rates belong to, so on a Saturday or a Monday morning you will see Friday's date.

Why your bank or card gives a different rate

The reference rate is a benchmark, not a price you can buy currency at. The ECB itself says the rates are published for information purposes only and discourages using them for transactions. Several things make the rate you actually get differ:

  • The spread. Banks and exchange offices sell currency for more than they buy it, and both of their rates sit some way from the reference rate. The gap is their margin.
  • Fees. Many banks and card issuers add a currency conversion fee on top of their exchange rate, often a percentage of the amount.
  • The day and time. A card payment is usually converted at the card network's or issuer's rate on the day the payment is settled, which can be a day or two after you paid. Markets also move during the day, while the reference rate is fixed once a day.
  • Paying in your own currency abroad. When a card terminal or cash machine abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, the conversion is done by the shop's or the machine's provider at a rate it sets, which is often worse. Choosing the local currency leaves the conversion to your own card issuer.

Use the converter to see roughly what an amount is worth and to compare offers against a neutral benchmark. Ask your bank or card issuer for the rate and fees that apply to your transaction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often are the exchange rates updated?

Once per working day. The ECB publishes new reference rates at around 16:00 CET, and the converter picks them up later the same day. There are no new rates at weekends or on TARGET closing days.

Why is the rate date not today?

The date is the day the ECB set the rates. Before the ECB publishes at around 16:00 CET, after a weekend or on a TARGET closing day, the latest rates are from an earlier working day, and the converter says so instead of pretending they are today's.

Can I use these rates to exchange money or pay a bill?

No. The reference rates are for information. When you exchange money or pay by card, your bank, card issuer or exchange office applies its own rate and fees. The converter shows you the benchmark, so you can see how far their offer is from it.

What is a cross rate?

An exchange rate between two currencies, neither of which is the euro, worked out through the euro. The ECB only publishes rates against the euro, so the converter takes the two currencies' euro rates and divides one by the other. 1,000 Norwegian kroner in Swedish kronor on 15 September 2026 was 1,000 × 11.2740 ÷ 10.7850 = 1,045.34 SEK.

Why can't I find my currency in the list?

The list contains the euro and every currency the ECB publishes a reference rate for, and nothing else. If the ECB does not quote a currency, the converter has no rate to use for it.

Why are some amounts shown without decimals?

Each result uses its currency's standard number of decimals. The Japanese yen has no minor unit in everyday use, so 1 euro on 15 September 2026, 178.86 yen, is shown as 179 JPY.
